Since our inception in 1880, Johnston & Jeff has put birds and wildlife firmly at the heart of everything we do. The values that underpin our company are the same today as they’ve always been. They include:
Quality is the foundation stone on which Johnston & Jeff is built. Birds only truly thrive on highly nutritious, clean food, formulated properly and void of dust and other pollutants.
That’s why we:
- Source only the best ingredients.
- Sample and lab test all raw materials before they enter our warehouses.
- Carry out quality checks at every stage of manufacturing.
Cleanliness is vital because impurities can be detrimental to bird health. So, to ensure every bag of food that leaves our factory is the cleanest on the market, we developed Our Unique Cleaning Process which involves 10 steps and checks.
Quality and cleanliness are not enough by themselves. To truly ensure kept and wild birds thrive, they need the right nutrition in the right quantities.
Our blends are formulated to individual species and for specific purposes, so you can be confident you’re feeding balanced levels of proteins, fats, carbohydrates and essential vitamins and minerals.
Our parrot blends also provide essential behavioural enrichment, meaning they promote psychological, as well as physical, wellbeing.
Johnston & Jeff dates back to 1880 when farmers and seed producers knew how to select, clean and blend seeds to create the best products. This knowledge still informs every decision we make.
But we don’t rest on our laurels. Johnston & Jeff encourages a culture of continuous learning and development, for example with UK Pet Food – formally the Pet Food Manufacturer’s Association. Here our Managing Director, Richard Johnston, is chairman and one of the founders of the Bird Group. This is a place where we exchange knowledge to improve the overall standard of pet care.
We know our reputation is only as good as our products and service, which is why integrity is one of our core values.
We purchase raw materials based on quality and correctness, never on price alone, and we never use any cheap fillers as these might be harmful to birds.
Supporting Conservation & Charities
We don’t just make bird feeds at Johnston & Jeff, we live bird feed because we love birds! Because of this, we like to give something back where we can. That’s why Johnston & Jeff founded the Bird Care Standards Association, lobbying the Government and setting the overall requirements of quality you find in bird food today.
We also sponsor a number of conservation projects carried out by The Parrot Society in the UK and across the globe. We also support parrot rescue and re-homing centres, and work with Chester Zoo on a number of conservation projects.
Trust & Accountability
Johnston & Jeff is a British manufacturer and we’re proud that we make everything at our Yorkshire manufacturing site.
The chain of accountability starts with our raw materials and we will reject any crop or timber that doesn’t meet our exacting standards.
Everyone involved in making our feeds knows their responsibilities to us, our customers, and ultimately, the birds that rely on our products.
This accountability underpins the trust our customers have in us and means that 140 years after we were founded, we’re still growing.
For 140 years and counting, Johnston & Jeff has held certain core commitments very dear. These include:
- To birds and wildlife.
- To our customers.
- To producing the finest products we can.
These embody all the values the company champions and guides every decision we make.
As technology improves, we are constantly investing in state-of-the-art machinery to make our manufacturing processes more efficient.
We lead the market when it comes to our product portfolio, always ensuring we evolve in line with customer demands and the latest research into avian nutrition.
Johnston & Jeff is a fifth-generation family business that has been owned by the same family since 1880.
