How Are There Parakeets In The UK?

Reading Time: 9 minutes

We’re very well used to seeing certain types of birds here in the UK and, of course, there’s nothing better than spotting bobbing robins in the garden, or little blackbirds scurrying about in the undergrowth… but there’s another bird that you might well have come across on your travels that made you question whether you’d been suddenly whisked off to some exotic climes completely unawares!

That’s right! Somehow there are flocks of bright green parakeets to be found in most parts of the country and it’s the only naturalised parrot that we have, one that can be spotted all year round – and there’s nothing better than catching a glimpse of their beautiful green feathers as they flit about.

The birds themselves are actually ring-necked parakeets, originally from Africa and southern Asia, and they were initially brought over here to be kept as pets.

Now wild, it’s thought that fears over parrot fever (a respiratory disease that can be transferred from birds to humans) led to many of these owners letting their birds fly away, with the Ministry of Health banning bird imports for 20 years!

If you know you have these birds in your local area and you want to encourage them into your garden at home, simply lay the table with the best bird food for parakeets and you’ll soon have your very own bright green flock!

They love nothing more than seeds, fruits and nuts, but they’ll also chow down on berries and grain, so it’s good to know that they’re not fussy! If you really want to give them a treat, however, stock up on our Premium Fruity Parakeet and Cockatiel and Big Parakeet blends, as these have been specifically produced with these birds in mind.
