Celebrate Your Feathered Friends This National Pet Day

Somehow we’re approaching the end of March, which means that we’re practically through a third of the year already… and, while this might be alarmingly fast for some, the fact that time continues to march on means that National Pet Day is almost here once again!

Taking place each year on April 11th, the event aims to celebrate the joy that pets of all kinds can bring into people’s lives, so now’s the time to think about how you intend to mark the day.

The first National Pet Day took place in 2006, the brainchild of pet and family lifestyle expert Colleen Paige. She wanted to create public awareness of all the animals sitting patiently waiting for their forever homes in shelters and rescue centres, with encouraging adoption instead of buying a pet one of the main ideas behind this campaign.

There are all sorts of ways you can give a little back and show animals just how grateful you are that they exist, whether that’s adopting a new pet from a local shelter or rescue organisation or volunteering at a rescue centre, but you can also look closer to home and devote the whole day to giving your own pets a whole lotta love.

Give them lots of kisses and cuddles, spoil them with their favourite food, take lots of snaps and showcase them on Instagram (there’s no such thing as too many photo shares!), take them on an adventure somewhere… the only limit is your imagination!

Show your birds some love

If you want to give your aviary birds a special treat this National Pet Day, the most obvious way to their heart is through their stomachs, as it is with most animals.

Alongside their typical bird feed, what about spoiling them with some Chinese millet sprays? These are stalks of millet seed that can provide both enrichment and nutrition at the same time, so it’s a very real win-win for all.

Not only is it a wonderful source of protein, carbohydrates and vitamins, but it also encourages birds to forage for the seeds, which gives them lots of stimulation and stress relief, keeping them happy and content.

If you’ve got baby parrots at home, millet spray can also teach them about textures and seed food extraction, so it makes for a wonderful treat indeed.

Or what about surprising them with a cuttlebone or two, the internal shell of a cuttlefish that has a rough texture to it, which makes it great for supporting beak strength, as well as serving as a calcium source and helping support good digestion. Another big win for your feathered friends!

There’s a huge amount you can do this National Pet Day to show your birds just how much you appreciate them. We’d love to know what you’ve got planned and what your pets mean to you – so get in touch to let us know.
